House in Baleal
The location is beautiful: a straight piece of land joined to the mainland by a sliver of sand. And yet it is also over-populated. The houve was a low, uninteresting construction with complicated problems resulting from time and poor design. It was also too small for the family, who uses it for weekends and holidays throughout the year. So it needed to be extended and its defects had to be rectified. There was little space, and not much room for maneuver, because Peniche Municipal Council has quite rightly laid down strict planning rules here, and does not allow buildings taller than two stories.
Nevertheless, we managed to create a reasonable lounge, a kitchen, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, storage rooms and turned the yard and a terrace into outdoor leisure areas.
The house’s design and the cladding materials are traditional for the region. As such, it blends in pleasantly and adds to the harmony of the location which, despite being densely built up, has a very special charm and life.
