FACTORY Lisbon

In this project, JB&AA was part of a team led by the architect Julian Breinersdorfer – author of the main concept of the intervention – and with the colaboration of Ângela Maurice. This is an industrial building built in the early 70s by the Portuguese State and that is part of a wider complex that constitutes the so-called “Manutenção Militar” (Military Maintenance), located in Beato, in the eastern part of Lisbon.

This particular building was designed to produce pasta and rice for the Portuguese Army.

Recently, the Portuguese State granted this set of buildings to the Lisbon City Council to develop a hub of innovative business activities so called “Hub Criativo do Beato”. This hub also includes some restaurants, museums, and others that complete the set. It is intended, therefore, to also contribute to a more global renovation of the area of the city in which it is located.

In this project, which intends to include several services (technological, creative, and innovative companies), we sought to preserve the image of the pre-existing building by inserting the equipment and technical and comfort conditions suitable for this type of activity. It also includes a space for a restaurant on the ground floor and a rooftop.
